*Never let your hair run out of moisture - Moisturise and seal daily
*Deep condition regularly - I DC on a weekly basis i.e after every shampoo. I also do a protein treatment once a month to maintain the strength of my hair (especially at the line of demarcation)
*Patience - Be patient with your hair. Dealing with two textures (the new growth and the previously relaxed hair) is no joke! Detangle from ends to root, preferably in sections, to minimise breakage. Also, make sure your hair is well moisturised before detangling.
*Protective styling - Always protect your ends and your hair in general. Long term protective styles like box braids, senegalese twists, Ghana weaving (cornrows) and weaves are my go to styles whilst on a stretch. Don't forget to moisturise and seal regularly even when in such styles as doing so helps minimise breakage and shedding during take down.
*Map out a regimen and be consistent with it. Sticking to a regimen your hair loves limits your chances of experiencing a setback.
*Lastly, know that it's okay to break the rules and do what works for you!
I'd definitely do an update on this list as my stretch progresses. Hope you find these tips helpful in getting through your stretch!
Xoxo, Damey.
